Shih Tzu is a breed of dogs that are believed to be ancient and their origin is still a mystery. However, there is a belief that these dogs were presented to the Chinese royals by the Tibetan monks. Wherever they came from, either from China or Tibet.
We cannot deny the fact that these little cuties have been a great pet since those times and still rank among the topmost favorite breeds of people around the world.
The name Shih Zu means little lion but this name does not relate to the nature of these dogs. They are not fierce at all but are adorable fluffy munchkins that melt our heart at the first glimpse. They are extremely playful babies and not used for hunting purposes.
The size of these dogs ranges from 9 to 10 1/2 inches tall and weigh about 9 to 16 pounds. The personality of Shih Tzu is more like a friend. It is affectionate and a cheerful dog.
It loves to stay close to its owner and the favorite place is the lap of the dear ones. Shi Tzu like all other breeds of dogs are vigilant and can recognize strangers. They even bark at them at first but after some time they become interested and become friends with everyone around.
The Shih Tzu is a popular pet because it does not require anything else when he is around the people he loves. It can live easily in a small apartment and does not need a lot of space to move around because of its small size.
According to the size, it is not very active and prefers staying indoors cuddling up with the owners. They need special attention because these dogs can injure themselves if they jump from a high object or someone steps on them.
The Shih Tzu performs well when given a proper diet. So the maintenance and good quality dog food really matter for these tiny size puppies. However, you need to keep a check on the calories, as they might get overweight if no attention is given to their diet.
That cute face, the big sparkly eyes and the lovely locks of gold and white catches the attention of anyone who looks at them for a second. Clipping up those locks into a topknot using different colored clips increase the attractiveness of this Shih Tzu to ten-fold.
Having a soft hair texture and being fluffy and cute at the same time, the Shih Tzus’ are irresistible dogs which makes your day better when you see them in the morning or after a tiring day at work. Grab these adorable babies and have an amazing experience.
I have two rescued shih=tzus, Millie who is cream and tan, and Holly who is black and white. From being scrawny little scraps when I had them, after tons of tlc and good diet, they are now what they should have been all along – happy, healthy, sunny little dogs, Millie being very laid back and Holly being lively. Holly, sadly, had to have gallstones removed before I adopted her, and she has been fed on Royal Canin dry and wet s/o food. I have found that there is a captive market for this food as I can’t find any other manufacturer who makes this, and it is quite expensive. Is there an alternative out there? I am glad not to have to feed my big boys on this.
